Chiefly correspondence of Theron Hervey Bakewell of Wellsburg, Brooke County, and Moundsville, Marshall County, Va. (now W. Va.), and his family, including father Samuel Roscoe Bakewell, brother Horatio N. Bakewell (discussing the production of pottery and glassware), sister Selina H. (Bakewell) Campbell (of Bethany, Va. [now W. Va.], discussing the activities of her husband, Alexander Campbell, and of the Disciples of Christ), wife Mary Bell (Martin) Tomlinson Campbell, and step-daughter Virginia Elizabeth Tomlinson (who wrote about her school life in Wheeling, Va. In the 1830s and 1840s Theron ran a store boat along the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, and there are several letters documenting economic and commercial conditions, particulary in the Ohio River Valley. Also included are accounts and legal papers, many relating to the estate of Jessee Tomlinson of Moundsville, first husband of Mary Bell (Martin) Bakewell; and Civil War memoranda and account books, 1862, kept by Theron at Camp Chase, Ohio, containing names, addresses, and details of arrest of fellow prisoners.
